During work on the wind-damaged roof, a material of concern consistent with vermiculite was identified, and asbestos testing was initiated. A preliminary test indicated levels above the allowable threshold, which prompted expanded sampling and additional precautions. Samples have been collected from exterior and interior areas of the school, and we are awaiting the results. As of today, the District has not received any written laboratory reports.
DEQ has been notified and remains informed of current conditions. With regulated controls and appropriate oversight in place, MP Environmental Services is completing precautionary exterior cleanup and abatement work as testing and laboratory analysis continue. We are also coordinating with our property and liability carrier, Montana Schools Property & Liability Insurance (MSPLIP).
To provide independent oversight, the District is finalizing an agreement with Tetra Tech as a third-party environmental consultant (currently under review by legal counsel) to support sampling, testing, and guidance on next steps.
During this next week, we expect to have a clearer understanding of the results and the path forward. A special board meeting will be needed, and the agenda will be posted at least 48 hours in advance, including the meeting time and location.
Thank you for your patience and support. Wishing you and your families a Merry Christmas and a safe, restful break.
