I want to provide an update regarding the midblock crosswalk on 2nd Avenue SW in front of the school.
Last week, during the school day, I was notified that the crosswalk was in the process of being removed. I immediately contacted the county due to concerns about student safety, and I appreciate that the work was stopped and rescheduled for Friday, when school is not in session.
That said, the larger conversation is still important.
This crossing is regularly used by students, families, and community members attending events at the Civic Center. Before it is permanently removed, the district has requested the engineering rationale for the decision and clarification of what pedestrian safety measures will be in place moving forward.
In a small community like ours, removing a crosswalk does not necessarily eliminate pedestrian traffic. People often continue to cross where it is most convenient. Our shared goal should be to ensure that crossing activity in front of the school is predictable and as safe as possible.
Additionally, the district has previously raised concerns about missing school zone signage in this same corridor, which remains unaddressed. If changes are being made directly in front of the school, it is especially important that appropriate school zone protections are clearly in place.
While the roadway falls under county jurisdiction, the district remains responsible for student safety at arrival and dismissal and throughout the school day.
The County Commissioners will be meeting at the Park City Community/Civic Center at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4. I encourage anyone with questions or concerns to attend.
Student safety must remain our shared priority.
Dave Whitesell, Superintendent
